Shortly after My Name Is Rand was published, I was invited to give a “tickling workshop” for KC Leather University, our local BDSM group. The following are some tips I came up with for this introductory level class:

Feathers and Brushes: Some people are feather-sensitive, but many people aren’t—or they may be sensitive only in certain spots. Explore and experiment! A somewhat stiff feather is usually best for most of the body; softer feathers can be used on the nose, ears, neck, and genital area. You can use many kinds of brushes, with bristles ranging from soft to hard; the hardest bristles can be devastating on the soles of the feet, but should have rounded “tips” on them to keep from scratching or breaking the skin.

Feet: Soles that are dry and callused usually aren’t very sensitive. A moisturizing treatment is in order! A regimen of lotioning the feet after showering and at bedtime can help a lot. In the meantime, try working a feather in between the toes—that almost always gets a reaction!

Some people say, “No pain, no gain.” My motto is, “No pain, no pain!” Keeping this in mind, here are a couple of advanced methods for increasing foot-ticklishness:

• “Roasting” the feet is a time-honored means of increasing sensitivity by tenderizing the sole. Some like to use a blow dryer, but even an open flame, such as from a cigarette lighter, will work—as long as it’s not held close enough to burn the skin!!
• Bastinado, the practice of beating or caning the soles of the feet, is a complex subject in its own right. I’m not into getting my soles beaten, but a couple of healthy open-handed slaps to the sole will increase circulation and ticklishness. A good technique to make soles more reactive after they’ve been tickled for a while.

Mummification: Body wrapping, which keeps arms and hands pinned to one’s sides, is a great way of increasing a bottom’s sense of helplessness. There’s nothing like being all wrapped up with only your poor, vulnerable bare feet sticking out…. Some people swear by plastic wrap, but you can also be rolled up in a blanket that is then secured with rope. An advanced form of mummification is plaster casting, which takes considerable time and expertise.

Safe and Sane Play: A reminder: when approaching a bondage situation with someone you don’t know very well, be sure to reach an agreement on the use of safe words. (The bottom who is gagged can use a safe signal, such as snapping the fingers.) There also should be mutual agreement ahead of time on the use of gags, blindfolds, etc.

Watch Out For: Hyperventilation (fast, panicky breathing) or dehydration. Hyperventilation, if left unchecked, can eventually lead to passing out. The experienced top will be alert to breathing patterns and give the bottom a rest break to restore normal breathing. The top should also keep a bottle of water handy, and make sure restraints are comfortable. (Restraint discomfort can distract the bottom from the main order of business!)

Shaving: Skin that’s been shaved and lubricated is bound to be more ticklish. The act of shaving can itself be very sensual. Remember two words: “safety razor.”

Tickling Media Forum: I mention this site because it’s the largest, with over 12,000 members from all over the world. Membership is free and allows you to participate in the many discussion forums. However, this site is not very gay-friendly, so I mostly leave it alone.
